05/22/2026. The Caravaca de la Cruz City Council has completed the improvement works on the Paseo de Santa Clara, an action that has allowed providing this street with new accessible sidewalks and reorganizing the parking area, thus improving safety, pedestrian mobility, and the functionality of one of the main access points to the historic center.
The intervention, funded by European ‘Next Generation’ funds from the National Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan and framed within the Tourism Sustainability Plan in Destinations of the ‘Tierras de la Vera Cruz’ Northwest Tourism Services Association, had a budget of 60,500 euros.
The works consisted of widening the road section to enable sidewalks adapted to universal accessibility criteria and creating a parking line with adequate dimensions for safe and comfortable use. Work was carried out on an area of 905 square meters by paving pedestrian areas with concrete pavers, renovating services, installing conduits for public lighting, horizontal and vertical signaling, and irrigation networks.
The Mayor of Caravaca de la Cruz, José Francisco García, highlighted that “this Tourism Sustainability Plan of the Northwest Tourism Services Association is allowing for the development of very specific and necessary actions in all the municipalities of the region, generating a cohesive destination image under the ‘Tierras de la Vera Cruz’ brand while reinforcing the unique resources of each town.”
José Francisco García further pointed out that “this type of investment promotes sustainable mobility and contributes to modernizing public spaces and tourism resources from a sustainable perspective, adapted to the new demands of the sector.”
The Paseo de Santa Clara constitutes a strategic point within the arrival route to the city for pilgrims and visitors, as the Pilgrim Reception Center, the Tourist Office, and bus and motorhome parking areas are located in its vicinity. The action has allowed for the reorganization of the road section, prioritizing pedestrian traffic and eliminating risk situations derived from the insufficient width of the existing sidewalks. Furthermore, the intervention improves the connection between the final stretch of the ‘Camino de la Cruz’ and the ‘Anillo Verde’ (Green Ring), strengthening the functionality of this corridor as a space for sustainable mobility and tourist hospitality.
