The Cehegín City Council, through the Northwest Tourism Services Association, has installed a new climate shelter in Ginés Ibáñez Park with the aim of improving comfort levels in this public space during high temperatures and encouraging its use during the hottest months.
The project involved the installation of shade sails in the northern area of Ginés Ibáñez Park, creating approximately 300 square meters of shaded area.
This space is of particular importance to the municipality’s activities, as it hosts the weekly market and serves as the site for fairground stalls and various elements associated with local festivities; consequently, the planned work will improve conditions for residents, merchants, and visitors alike.
The investment amounted to €33,033.00 (VAT included) and is part of the initiative to create climate refuges under the “Northwest Region of Murcia: Tradition, Flavor, and Nature” Tourism Sustainability Plan for Destinations (PSTD).
The initiative is funded by the European Union – NextGenerationEU, under the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan, within the tourism sector modernization and competitiveness program.
With this project, Cehegín is introducing new infrastructure designed to adapt public spaces to high temperatures through a sun-protection solution, enabling the area to remain in use for commercial, social, festive, and tourism activities during the summer months.
The creation of climate shelters is part of the measures planned to adapt tourist destinations in the northwest of the Region of Murcia to the effects of climate change, enhancing comfort for residents and visitors and facilitating the enjoyment of heritage and public spaces throughout the year.
